The Institute of Applied Mathematics, which honorably represented the School of Science and other four institutes were the first to become part of CHUNG CHENG UNIVERSITY in August 1989. In October, 1991 the university campus was formally put into use. The seven faculty members in the Institute of Applied Mathematics and its twenty graduate students for M.S. program moved to occupy the Mathematics Building to begin a new era of teaching, research and learning. In August of 1992, the Department of Mathematics and the doctoral program of the Institute of Applied Mathematics were established simultaneously. In 1993, the Institute of Statistiical science acquired its first class of ten graduate students for M.S. program.
The three institutes and the department share all resources. The Institute of Applied Mathematics and the institute of Mathematics which offer both Master and Doctorate degree puts focuses on Partial Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Number Theory, Algebra , Complex Analysis and Differential Geometry. The Institute of Statistical Science which currently offers only Master degree puts focuses on theory and methods related to statistical science. Each field of the department would be led by some faculty members to hold regular seminars.
Currently, there are seven full professors, sixteen associate professors and five assistant professors in the department and its institutes. More faculty members will be recruited year by year. Among the faculty, four of them have been awarded several times as outstanding researchers of mathematics by National Science Council or by Ministry of Education. Moreover, one of our faculty is the member of Academia Sinica and received the Presidential Award. These honors make the institutes and department one of the top Mathematics graduate institutes and departments in the nation.
Based upon the belief that "mathematics is the mother to science", the Department of Mathematics has the courses so arranged as to be in line with the goal of providing the training of fundamental mathematical education in order to cherish student's basic understanding about the field of mathematics and build up complete ability to do analysis and derivations. And in so doing, the students may be further guided through specialized courses at graduate level to reach advanced area of mathematical research, or to apply the acquired analyzing ability to work in other professions for contributing efforts in developing a profound and healthy society.
